Biography
Originally from Englewood, New Jersey, Stuart Klinger began to play
guitar at the age of 6. At the age of 16 he studied the classical
guitar inspired by guitarists Andre Segovia, Julian Bream, and John
Williams. Growing up in New Jersey in the 1970's Stuart played in many
rock and and roll bands. While attending Sarah Lawrence College in
1978, he studied classical guitar with Albert Valdes Blain, as well as
being exposed to the jazz guitar of Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt
and Wes Montgomery.
After graduating from college, Stuart attended Mannes Conservatory of
Music. There he performed with the Mannes Camerada, an ambitious early
music ensemble. After leaving Mannes, New York became his classroom.
Hungry for knowledge, he studied with as many great musicians as he was
able including, Ted Dunbar, Fred Hand, Joe Ravo, Myron Weiss, John
Scofield, John Abercrombie and Jack Wilkins. He became a busy
free-lance musician performing with numerous jazz and rock groups. He
landed a job as house guitarist at the famous 37th Street Hideaway as
well as a stint at the Glen Island Park Casino.
In the 80's, Stuart began playing with some popular rock and roll
bands, some of which achieved major label success. In 1990, he joined
The Rake's Progress, recording for Geffen Records and touring the
United States, Canada and Europe. Stuart is currently recording and
performing with Barnacle Bill as well as many different classical, jazz
and rock ensembles. He is also teaching private lessons in a wide
variety of styles including the very effective Suzuki method.
